Description

First British edition of this work which was based on Nevius’s findings from his 40 years as a missionary in China particularly in Shantung Province, where the spread of Christianity was resisted by older Chinese traditions and where he recounts stories of demonology and demons from researches. With an Introduction By Rev. F. F. Ellinwood, D.D. This is the first british printing, but of the US second edition. Original yellow covers are dusty . Signature to the title page, dated 1897, of Louise Duff-Dunbar, pioneer female  archaeologist of Ackergill Tower, Wick , wife of Garden Duff-Dunbar [later Baronet of Sutherland] , mother of Sir George Duff-Dunbar , the historian and military officer.  Prepaid victorian envelope addressed to her laid in. Folded in is an antique glassine sheet which I believe may have been the original wrapper for the book. A scarce work.
