Description

No edition statement or date but this is an early copy, in typical Newnes small format. Tan cloth black titling. With the bookplate of the Chatsworth House (Duke of Devonshire) Attic Sale and part of a collection of detective and mystery fiction sold at that sale. Also has a stamp indicating the book was sent to an unnamed recipient as part of the ‘Poole Book Drive’ I would assume that this was therefore sent as part of the war effort – either first or second, though the style of the stamp and ink suggest WW1 which would be consistent with the likely publication date. The Spectator August 1914 reviewed the book thus: ‘The Curse of Cloud. By J. B. Harris-Burland. (Chapman and Hall. 6s.)John Cloud, a celebrated traveller and explorer, is the hero of this story, the scene of which, however, except for a few chapters, is laid in England. The novel is full of exciting incidents, and deals with the disappearance of the heir to an old estate.’ Covers worn but clean. See description for further details
