Description

First edition in the original illustrated wrappers, frayed to the lower spine and a little foxed to the edges. Inscription to the title page ‘with the author’s compliments’ . A Good+ copy of a scarce item. Allegedly Jock Howieson escued James V from a gang of gipsies or robbers while His Majesty was in disguise as the Laird of Ballengeich. There is a house said to be his at Cramond village on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The tale was told originally by Walter Scott in his ‘Tales of a Grandfather’ and may be apocryphal. The author is better known under his pseudonym James McGovan under which he wrote early crime stories (published as factual)
