A nice copy of this early work on James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose the great Civil War general and poet. The book was published abroad by George Wishart in 1647 – with a corrected printing following in 1648. The Marquis of Montrose, James Graham, was executed in 1650 with a copy of the book hung around his neck on a strap which he had tied a bible to throughout his campaigns.. Small 8vo [25 cm by 10cm], [viii], 231, [1], engraved portrait frontispiece, with the title printed in red and black, 19th century brown morocco, gilt edges. Bookplate of James Gerard Graham to front pastedown, title repaired with some letters supplied in ink facsimile, 5 leaves cut close with loss of a few letters
