Description

Two volume set of this standard work on the English statesman beheaded in 1683 for rebelling against Charles II as one of the Rye House plotters. Fulkl leather binding with raised bandsand gilt titles. Th ebinding is worn, with chipping to base and head of spine of Volume 2. The bookplate of Thomas Gladstone, brother of the prime Minister. Interesting gift inscription to Gladstone   ‘T.G. from Turner ‘Eton College July 1822’. The artist Turner produced sketches of Eton and the Thames and used paper watermarked  paper dated 1822 for  Thames and river landscape studies. However, sadly,  the signature does not appear to match that of the artist.
