Description
The first of his novels to be translated by Garnett, whose translations while not the most correct still retain a great deal of potency and a lyrical quality absent in many modern translations. The language is flowing and more of the period and she remain the preferred translator for some (including myself) . This is a reprint (the first appearing in 1912), however is in the same format as the first edition, with the peacock patterned spine. A Fair copy only – the spine is worn and detaching to the lower edge – needs rebacked. Inscription to fep, internally Good.
